A Family that Journeys Towards Jerusalem

The mystery of Christmas is the mystery of God becoming man... the invisible God becoming visible. And God became man in a family, in the family formed by Mary and Joseph. Thus, Blessed John Paul II asserts: “The divine mystery of the Incarnation of the Word… has an intimate connection with the human family.”

Yes, Christmas is a celebration of faith, but our celebration today, the Feast of the Holy Family, reminds us that Christmas will always be a celebration of the family.

And so, we ask: what can every family learn from the family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph?

The gospel today talks about the story of the Lost and Finding of Jesus in the Temple. We can learn a lot from this experience of the Holy Family but allow me to focus on one.
The gospel tells us that each year Jesus, Mary and Joseph went up to Jerusalem for the Feast of Passover. Jerusalem is where the temple is. Jerusalem is the center of Jewish faith

If we are to imitate the Holy Family, then we must be a family ever willing to journey towards our own Jerusalem; the journey to Jerusalem is a journey of faith. We must be a family willing to enter into the path of faith. We must become a family willing to know more about our Catholic Faith. We must become a family that longs to grow into friendship and intimacy with God.

Later on, Jerusalem too, is where Jesus met his fatal condemnation. It is a place where he suffered and just outside its walls, it is where he died on the cross.

Oftentimes, it is through the cross that faith grows and matures. Dealing with conflicts and issues in the family is not always easy; asking and giving forgiveness in the family are not always pleasant; working for family reconciliation is always a demanding task. But it is precisely in facing these with openness, honesty and faith that families grow in unity, in genuine love and true friendship with God.

My dear friends, it is still Christmas, but lest we forget, a re-reading of the Story of Christmas reveals to us the shadow of the cross. In the story of Christmas, we hear about the rejection from the inn keeper, the poverty of the manger, the killing of the innocents, the escape into Egypt. All these reveals that from the very beginning, the family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph has always known trials and difficulties but these did not stop them to be united and persistent in fulfilling the will of the Father

Let us not be afraid for our families. Let us not be afraid to journey into our own Jerusalem - a place where demands for sacrifice will be found, but it is also a place where a renewal of love and faith in the family awaits.

Let us allow the family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph to lead us. Let us allow the Holy Family to transform us to become holy, Christian, Catholic, families. Amen.

Resurrection is for real.


The risen Christ appeared to his disciples many times.
Jesus wanted to assure his disciples that resurrection is for real. More than words, Jesus showed them his wounded hands, his wounded feet. Jesus showed them his pierced side. Jesus ate with them. Jesus wanted them to touch him, to touch his body scarred by the crucifixion. The risen Lord is the crucified Lord. Resurrection is more than news. It is not rumor. Resurrection is  for real.  Our God is a living God.

And so we ask ourselves:
How real is resurrection for us today? How do we see resurrection? Are we able to touch resurrection?

I know of a parish volunteer who lost both of her parents in a span of two years. While mourning for the loss of her parents, she was diagnosed with cancer. She had to undergo chemotherapy. And as if this is not enough, while undergoing chemo, their house got burned. What a tragedy? I could have understood her if she began to question God, to question her faith. I could have understood her if she asked for a leave in her parish work. Mag-lay low muna. Hindi muna magserve. Maglaan muna ng panahon para sa sarili.

But, no, I never heard her complain. I never heard her question God. She never stopped serving the parish, spending time in prayer and offering her time to help the needy. Every time I asked her how is everything she would always say: May awa ang Diyos, Father.

Resurrection is our refusal to give in to despair and hopelessness even when we are faced with burdens that seem too heavy to carry. Resurrection is our rejection of cynicism, negativity and bitterness even when illness, loss and separation beset us. Resurrection is our continued trust in goodness and grace even when things happen not according to our plans and expectations. Resurrection is our persistence to remain warm, kind and hospitable even when we have a just cause for hatred.

The living God is for real. Resurrection is for real. Look at your heart. Look at your life. Do you see resurrection?

More than a prayer of thanksgiving...


28th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Ten lepers approached the Lord. All ten were healed from their leprosy but only one came back to offer gratitude and praise. Jesus made him an example for all.

Gratitude is a very important attitude for all of us. Gratitude is the only appropriate disposition we can have before the Lord. What does it mean to be truly grateful to God?

As a sign of our gratitude to God we can choose to offer a prayer of thanks, or a mass of thanksgiving or even a part of our treasure but ultimately what God wants is an offering of ourselves.

In the first reading, Naaman was healed from his leprosy by taking a bath in the river Jordan. Gratefully Naaman offered gifts to Elisha but Elisha rejected them. So Naaman promised, “I will no longer offer holocaust or sacrifice to any other god except the Lord.” Naaman understood that it was not gifts that Elisha wanted but his profession of faith, his very life.

And so, during the offertory of the mass when we offer money for the collections we do not only offer money but our offering invites us ultimately to offer ourselves. Kitang-kita ang paanyayang ito kapag nagmimisa sa barrio, lalu na sa liblib na lugar. Pagdating ng pag-aalay, yung magbababoy ang alay, baboy. Yung magmamanok ang alay, manok. Yung magugulay ang alay, gulay. Malinaw na malinaw na ang kanilang alay ay simbulo ng kanilang sarili.

Being grateful to God entails more than our prayers of thanksgiving, more than the offering of what we have. Genuine gratitude to God demands an offering of ourselves, a surrendering of our time, talent and treasure for selfless service, a profession of faith to a generous God.

Ang Bituin sa Paglalakbay

Solemnity of the Epiphany of Our Lord

Kung babalikan natin ang kuwento ng Pasko may mahahalagang paglalakbay ang nangyari.

Noong Simbang Gabi, narinig natin ang tungkol sa paglalakbay ni Maria at ni Jose. Naglakbay sila patungong Bethlehem. Gabay nila ang pagpapakita ng anghel at ang tinig na nagsabi ng plano ng Diyos para sa kanila.

Noong bisperas naman ng Pasko, narining natin ang tungkol sa paglalakbay ng mga pastol. Naglakbay sila mula sa kanilang pastulan patungong sabsaban kung saan naroon ang Kristo, kasama ni Maria at Jose. Tulad ni Maria at Jose, gabay ng mga pastol ang pagpapakita ng anghel at ang tinig na nagsabi tungkol sa pagdating ng hinihintay nilang tagapagligtas.

Ngayon naman, narinig natin ang tungkol sa paglalakbay ng mga pantas, o ng mga mago, o tinatawag nating Tatlong Hari. Naglakbay sila mula malayong lupain, patungong Bethlehem kung saan natagpuan nila ang isang sanggol sa sabsaban. Gabay nila ang isang maningning na bituin. Walang nagpakitang anghel. Wala ring tinig na nagsabi kung ano ang plano ng Diyos. Ang tanging hawak ng Tatlong Hari ang pananampalataya sa kahulugan ng pagsikat ng isang natatanging bituin.

Sinasabi na ang buhay ng tao ay maituturing na paglalakbay. Kung gayon isang bagong paglalakbay ang ating nasimulan sa pagpasok ng isang bagong taon. At sa paglalakbay natin sa buhay na ito, mas katulad ng sa atin ang paglalakbay ng Tatlong Hari kaysa sa paglalakbay ng mga pastol, ni Maria at Jose. Sa paglalakbay natin wala namang nagpapakita sa ating anghel at wala rin namang tinig na nagsasabi kung ano ang plano ng Diyos sa atin. Pero merong liwanag, merong bituin – ang liwanag na nagmumula sa salita ng Diyos, sa turo ng simbahan at sa biyaya ng mga sakramento. Ito ang nagnining nating bituin.

Huwag po tayo maghanap ng mga anghel na magpapakita sa atin, o maghintay ng tinig na galing sa langit na magsasabi sa atin kung anong gagawin natin. Nasa atin na ang mga bituing magliliwanag sa daan ng ating paglalakbay – ang liwanag ng salita ng Diyos, ang liwanang ng turo ng simbahan, at ang liwanag ng biyaya ng mga sakramento.

This 2010 let us all resolve to love more the word of God. Let us resolve to learn more about the teaching of the Church. Let us resolve to understand and celebrate more meaningfully the sacraments. These are the stars that will illuminate our journey of faith.

GUSTO MO, GUSTO KO RIN

Nung bata ako natatandaan ko pag ang ulam namin sa bahay ay may mainit na sabaw, halimbawa sinigang o nilaga, laging may tutong na kanin sa lamesa. Nung pumasok ako sa seminaryo, ni minsan hindi sila naghanda ng tutong na kanin, kahit gaano kainit ang sabaw ng sinigang o ng nilaga [madalang naman maghain ng sinigang at nilaga sa seminaryo, laging adobo, o kaya prito hehe]. Minsan tinanong ko ang nanay ko kung bakit may nakahaing tutong pag may mainit na sabaw ang ulam. Sabi niya, "Anak yan kasi ang gusto ng tatay mo."

"Anak yan kasi ang gusto ng tatay mo." Ito ang katunayan na mahal ng nanay ko ang tatay ko. Hindi ba pagmahal mo ang isang tao, aalamin mo ang gusto niya, para subukan mo ring gustuhin? Aalamin mo ang ayaw niya, para susubukang ayawin din? Aalamin mo ang mahal niya, para subukang mahalin din? Ito ang isang hamon ng pagmamahal natin sa isa't isa. Ito rin ang hamon ng pagmamahal natin sa Diyos. Kung talagang mahal natin ang Diyos, hindi ba't tama lamang na alamin natin ang gusto niya at sikaping gustuhin din natin? Alamain ang ayaw niya at sikaping ayawan din natin? Alamin ang mahal niya at sikaping mahalin din natin? Kung tunay ang pagmamahal natin sa Diyos aalamin natin ang kanyang kalooban, at sisikaping ang kalooban niya ay maging kalooban din natin.

Ngayon katulad ako ng aking tatay, dahil pagmainit na sabaw ang ulam, nilaga o sinigang, naghahanap ako ng tutong [kaya lang lagi wala kasi hindi nagtututong sa rice cooker, automatic na eh hehe]. Ang masarap sa tatay ko masarap din sa akin. Yung gusto niya gusto ko rin. Sana maging katulad din tayo ni Jesus, yung gusto niya gusto rin natin; yung kalooban niya ay kalooban din natin.

ITALAGA

Italaga ang sarili sa Diyos. "Walang kahati. Walang kaagaw. Walang kapalit."

PANGATAWANAN ANG SALITA

Ngayon po ay Catechetical Sunday. Nagpapaalala sa atin na tayo pong lahat ay katekista. Hindi lang po yung mga nagtuturo ng religion sa mga eskuwelahan. Yung mga magulang dito, katekista kayo sa mga anak ninyo. Yung mga ate at kuya dito, katekista kayo sa mga kapatid ninyo. Ang mga nakatatanda ay katekista sa mga nakakabata. Tayong lahat ay katekista sa isa’t isa.

Ano ba ang ibig sabihin ng “katekista”? Ito ay galing sa salitang Griyego na “katechizein” na ang ibig sabihin ay “to teach through words,” ang magturo sa pamamagitan ng salita. Sa Matandang Tipan ang Salita ay kaisa ng gawa. “Dabar” ang salitang Hebreo para sa salita na ang ibig sabihin ang salita ay gawa at ang gawa ay salita. Halimbawa, ang salita ng Diyos “Let ther be light” kasabay ng salita ang pagkakaroon ng liwanag. Salita ni Jesus “pinatawad na ang iyong kasalanan” kasama nito ang tunay na pagpapatawad. Ang salita ay gawa. Ang gawa ay salita. Yan ang “Dabar.”

Maiuugnay natin dito ang sinabi ni San Pablo sa ikalawang pagbasa na siya ay tagapagturo ng katotohanan at pananampalataya. Siya ay tagapgturo ng katotohanan dahil si Jesus ang katotohanan at ng pananampalataya dahil ang itinuturo niya ay nakikita sa gawaing may pananampalataya.

Ayaw natin sa mga taong dada lang ng dada pero walang gawa. Ayaw natin sa mga taong maganda ang salita kapag kaharap subalit iba ang ginagawa pagtalikod. Ayaw natin sa mga taong plastic. Pero kung titingnan natin ang ating sarili, ito ang katotohanan ng ating karanasan. May mga salita tayong hindi natin ginagawa.

Ang hamon sa atin, pangatawanan ang ating salita. Sa bawat misa na pinagdirwang natin sinasabi natin “Sumasampalatay ako sa Diyos” pero pagnasaktan tayo at kailangang magpatawad sumasampalataya pa rin ba tayo sa Diyos? Kapag kailangan ng magsakripisyo, sumasampalataya pa rin ba tayo sa Diyos? Kapag wala pa ring trabaho, o pag-asenso, o pera kaya, sumasampalataya pa rin ba tayo sa Diyos? O nagpapasya tayo na parang walang Diyos? Nabubuhay tayo na parang walang Diyos?

Ilang pangako na ang napako? Ilang “I love you” na ang ating tinalikuran? Ilang beses na tayong nawalan ng isang salita? Ilang beses nang nakalimutan ang pananampalataya? Ilang beses nang ‘di napangatawanan ang ating mga salita?

Lahat po tayo ay katekista, tinatawag na magturo, hindi lamang sa salita, kundi lalung higit sa gawa. Sikaping sa ating buhay na ang ating salita ay gawa at ang ating gawa ay salita.

TRIUMPH OF THE CROSS OF JESUS CHRIST

"so must the Son of Man be lifted up."

These were the words of the gospel of John in describing how the Son of Man shall bring eternal life to those who believe in him.

A wholistic view of the Johannine gospel reveals to us that “to be lifted up” means two things: crucifixion and resurrection. Jesus the Christ was “lifted up” when he was mounted on the cross, nailed to it and left to die. He was lifted from the earth and hunged on the cross. The Son of Man was lifted up on the cross. Also, Jesus the Christ was “lifted up” when three days later, he rose from the dead. He was lifted from the bondage of death, to the glory of the Father’s love. The Son of Man was lifted up to heaven [although this statement may be taken as referring to Ascension alone, the mystery of Ascension forms part of the wider mystery of the glory of Jesus that begins in his Resurrection]. For the gospel of John, to be lifted up is to be crucified and to rise again. The death and the new life of Jesus, this is the act of being “lifted up.” This union we find in the cross. On the cross Jesus died. Through the cross he rose again.

The cross which was a sign of death, shame and injustice, was transformed into a sign of life, hope and salvation. Death and life become one in the triumph of the cross of Jesus Christ. As formerly the Jews are afraid of the cross, today, we Christians, embrace the cross, for in the cross we find new life, strength and courage. In the cross we find freedom, victory and triumph. For united in every cross of this world, in every trial, pain, suffering and poverty, is the promise of hope, “inheritance of the land,” life eternal and salvation.

The cross calls us to face squarely the hurts and challenges of this life. But we do not face them with eyes closed, or with trepid hearts. We face them with faith and love for we know we shall overcome; we shall be “lifted up.”

GOD'S POWERFUL WORD

Memorial of St. John Chrysostom

St. John was known for his eloquence. He was known for the power of his words. Chrysostom in Greek means “golden tongue.” This quotation from his writings reveal to us the origin of his powerful words: “I have his promise; I am surely not going to rely on my own strength? I have what he has written: that is my staff, my security, my peaceful harbor.” St. John was referring to God’s word.

The power of St. John’s word is rooted in the power of God’s word. He knew the power of God’s word and knew how to share it with those entrusted to him. His words were powerful because they were empowered by God’s word. His words wielded power because they were echoes of God’s.

Do we believe in the power of God’s word?

How important is His word for us?

PAGPASAN NG KRUS

Sinumang hindi magpapasan ng kanyang krus at sumunod sa akin ay hindi maaring maging alagad ko.

Malinaw ang sinabi ni Jesus sa ebanghelyo. Ang pagpasan ng krus ay bahagi ng buhay ng bawat Kristiyano. At naniniwala akong ang katotohanang ito ay kailangang ulit-ulitin, dahil hindi ito ang tawag ng buhay dito sa mundo. Kailangan ito laging ipaalala, kung tinig ng mundo ang papakinggan wala lugat ang krus sa mundo.

Para sa buhay natin sa daigdig na ito, mas madali mas okey, mas maikli mas okey, mas maginhawa mas okey.

Bakit may mga estudyanteng nandaraya sa exam para pumasa? Bakit may mga estudyanteng bumibili ng leakage, gumagawa ng kodigo para pumasa sa board? Dahil mas maikling panahon sa pag-aaral pero pagpasa din ang resulta. Mas madali, mas maganda.

Bakit may mga dalaga, maganda ang career, maganda ang kinabukasan, matalino, pero pagnabuntis ng hindi kasal, naiisipang ipalaglag ang bata? Kasi mas madaling ipalaglag ang bata kesa magbuntis ng siyam na buwan, mapurnada ang mga plano sa buhay, at mag-alaga ng sanggol. Mas madali mas maganda.

Bakit may mga taong gagawin ang lahat guminhawa lang ang buhay? Mga taong magnanakaw, mandaraya, kukuha ng hindi kanila, mangungurakot para guminhawa lang ang buhay. Dahil mas maginhawa mas maganda.

Walang krus dito. Dahil ang krus kailanman hindi madali, hindi maikli, hindi maginhawa. Ang krus kailangan ng sakripisyo. Subalit tandaan natin, sa krus ni Kristo dito tayo nakatagpo ng buhay, dito tayo naktanggap ng kalayaan, ng yakap ng Diyos na pumawi sa anumang paglaugmok natin sa kasalanan, sa kamatayan, sa pag-iisa. Ang krus ni Kristo ang ating buhay.

We are not afraid of the cross because in the cross is our life. Jesus showed us that in suffering there is redemption, there is meaning, there is light. If we want a satisfaction that is temporary, a satisfaction that the world gives and also takes away, then listen to the voice of this world. But if you yearn for a joy that lasts, a joy that no suffering and pain can take away, then listen to Jesus, take up your cross daily and follow him.

Ganyan ba talaga ang buhay Kristiyano? Puno ng krus? Super-hirap? Alam naman nating lahat na “walang ligaya dito sa lupa na hindi dinilig ng luha.” Hindi tayo takot na magpasan ng krus dahil alam natin ito ang daan sa tunay na kaginhawahan. Ito ang ipinakita ni Jesus, at ito ang ating pinananaligan. Amen.

SAKRIPISYO

Kilala nating lahat si Manny Pacquiao. Kahit naririnig nating siya ay sabungero, malakas pumusta sa bilyar, at sabi ng iba babaero – ang isang kahanga-hangang bagay sa kanya ay ang dedikasyon niya sa pag-iinsayo. At hindi niya ito magagawa kung hindi siya marunong magsakripisyo. Sakripisyo muna sa ibang bagay, ang ibuhos ang lahat ng atensyon sa paghahanda para sa laban. Dahil ang daan sa tagumpay ay pagsasakripisyo.

Kilala ba natin sa Rex Barnardo? Siya ay disabled; naka-wheelchair. Dahil sa kanyang kapansanan hindi siya pinapasok ng kanyang mga magulang sa elementarya at sa high school. Subalit siya’y tinuruan ng kanyang mga tiyahin ng pagbabasa at pagsusulat. Sabi sa artikulo ng Inquirer [www.inquirer.net] hinihiram niya ang mga libro ng kanyang mga kapatid para basahin at madalas mas nauuna siyang makatapos kaysa kanila. Sa bandang huli siya ay nakatapos ng Kolehiyo, Psychology. At nakatapos ng masters in development management. Kahit may kapansanan, ang daan tungo sa tagumpay ay ang pagtahak sa landas ng pagsasakripisyo.

Ito rin ang paalala ni Jesus sa ebanghelyo: walang sinumang makasusunod sa akin ng hindi pinapasan ang kanyang krus. Walang sinumang makakasunod kay Jesus ng hindi marunong magsakripisyo.

Ang daan ng Krus ay taliwas sa daan ng mundo, dahil ang daan ng mundo ay kung ano ang madali, magaan, at maginhawa. Hindi ito ang daan ni Jesus. Hindi ito ang daan ng Krus. Kung nais nating makamit ang tagumpay ni Jesus, kailangang pasanin ang krus, kailangang matutong magsakrispisyo.

SINO ANG TUNAY NA HUMBLE?

Sabi ng unang pagbasa, “Maging mapagpakumbaba ka sa pagtupad ng tungkulin, at mamahalin ka ng mga malapit sa Diyos.” Sabi ng ating ebanghelyo, “Sapagkat ang nagpapakataas ay ibaba, at ang nagpapakababa ay itataas.”

Kalugud-lugod sa Diyos ang may mababang loob. Paano ba magpakumbaba? Sino ang taong mapagpakumbaba? Sino ang tunay na humble? Yung taong walang imik, sa isang tabi lang? Yung taong hindi marunong makipagtalo, mahinahon lagi ang boses? Yung taong hindi marunong magalit, laging nagbibigay? Yung taong mahiyain, walang dating?

Maaring isipin na ang pagpapakumbaba ay isang kahinaan, kaysa mabuting katangian na kailangan nating lahat. Ano ba ang tunay na pagpapakumbaba? Sino ang tunay na humble? Dalawang bagay po.

Una, ang tunay na kababaang loob ay alam kung anong kaya niya at handang ibahagi ito sa iba. Ang taong may kababaang loob ay kilala ang sarili at alam ang kanyang kakayahan, at sa pagkakataong kakailanganin ang kanyang kakayahan ay handang ibahagi ito sa nangangailangan. May mga pagkakataong sa isang grupo alam kung sino ang may kakayahang mamuno, subalit paghinilingan siyang mamuno, tumtatanggi at sinasabing, “Huwag ako. Hindi ko kaya yan.” Kahit alam ng lahat na kaya niya. Hindi po iyan humility. Yan po ay false humility. Dahil hindi tinatanggap kung ano ang kaya, at hindi ibinabahagi sa iba. Genuine humility is to know who we are, what we can do, and how to share.

Pangalawa, ang tunay na kababaang loob ay alam kung ano ang hindi kaya at handang humingi ng tulong sa iba. Dahil alam niya ang kanyang kakayahan, alam din niya ang kanyang kahinaan, at marunong humingi ng tulong kung kinakailangan. Sino ba ang mayabang? Hindi ba iyong nagmamarunong at hindi naman pala kaya; hindi ba iyong nagmamagaling na wala naman palang alam. Dahil hindi tinatanggap ang hindi niya kaya, hindi alam kung kailan dapat humingi ng tulong sa iba. Genuine humility is to accept who we are not, what we cannot do and how much help we need.

Ang tunay pong kabaang loob ay hindi nakikita sa pagiging tahimik, o mahiyain, o walang kibo. Ang tunay na kababaang loob ay nakikita sa makatotohanang pagkilala sa sarili, ano ang kaya mo, ano kaya mong ibahagi, ano ang hindi mo kaya, at kailan mo kailangan ang tulong ng iba.

Kung malinaw po sa atin ito, walang dahilan para magyabang, dahil tayong lahat may kanya-kanyang kaya, may kanya-kanyang hindi kaya. Kaya nga inaasahang magtutulungan. Walang taong kaya ang lahat. Walang taong walang maibabahagi. Walang taong walang kailangang tulong. Walang taong maaring mabuhay mag-isa.

Kung ikay ay may mababang loob, sabi ng unang pagbasa, ikaw ay tunay na mamahalin. Bakit? Dahil kung ikaw ay may tunay na kababaang loob, ikaw ay totoo sa iyong sarili: alam kung anong kaya mo at handang ibahagi sa iba, tinatanggap kung anong hindi mo kaya at handang humingi ng tulong kung kinakailangan. Ang taong mapagpakumbaba minamahal. Ang taong mayabang iniiwasan. Mamili ka.

LOSING A "HEAD"

Today is the memorial of the beheading of St. John the Baptist. King Herod ordered the beheading of John in response to the request of the daughter of Herodias, the wife of his brother Phillip whom Herod married, after delighting him with the daughter's entertainment, and after considering what Herod's officers will say if he did not fulfill his promise. John was beheaded, but I believe it was Herod who lost a head.

The word head is used to designate a leader, the one who provides direction, who leads in doing what is right and true. Although John was beheaded, he did not lose his head - he did not loose his leadership. In fact, by his martyrdom, John provided a clear direction for his followers to take; he unequivocally proclaimed what is right and true, that is, standing firm for the truth. Although John was beheaded, he did not lose his head. Herod did.

Herod liked John; he loved listening to him. But John's words brought discomfort to him, and so he kept John in prison. But this fondness of John was easily compromised to uphold his stature and to safeguard his image in the eyes of his officers. It was not a love in conviction. When asked for the head of the Baptizer, Herod easily gave in. He was not a true leader. He did not provide the direction towards what is right and true. His great concern for his reputation took over. Although, it was Herod who ordered the beheading of John, it was him who lost his head - he lost the true sense of leadership.

Between John and Herod, it was John who was beheaded. But it was Herod who lost his "head".

NAG-AALAB AT NAGNININGAS

“Naparito ako upang magdala ng apoy sa lupa – at sana’y napagningas na ito!” Ang pagdating daw po ng Anak ng Diyos dito sa lupa ay katulad ng pagdating ng apoy. At tungkulin po nating mga nananlig kay Kristong anak ng Diyos na papagningaisin ang apoy na ito, na papa-alabin ang apoy na ito.

Ano ang pagkakaiba ng pananampalatayang ordinaryo lamang at ng pananampalatayang nag-aalab? Sa pagsisimba halimbawa, ang hinihingi ng batas ng simbahan ay magsimba kung araw ng linggo, sa makatuwid isang beses sa isang linggo. Para sa ordinaryong pananampalataya sapat na ang magsimba ng isang beses sa isang linggo, ang magsimba kung araw ng Linggo. Pero sa pananampalatayang nag-aalab hindi kuntento ang minsanang pagsisismba sa isang linggo, magsisikap makapagsimba araw-araw hangga’t maari. Ang pananampalatayang nag-aalab ay nagbibigay ng higit sa hinihingi ng batas.

Sa pagtulong sa nangangailangan halimbawa, ang hinihingi ng ebanghelyo ay isang basong tubig para sa nauuhaw at pagkain para sa nagugutom. Para sa ordinaryong pananampalataya sapat nang ibigay ang hinihingi ng batas, isang basong tubig at pagkain. Ngunit para sa pananampalatayang nag-aalab pagkatapos ibigay ang hinihingi ng batas, naghahanap pa ng paraan kung paano makakatulong para hindi lamang pawiin ang uhaw o gutom, kundi maiangat ang dignidad ng mga dukha at mamuhay sa kaginhawan bilang mga tunay na anak ng Diyos. Ang pananampalatayang nag-aalab ay tumutulong higit pa sa kailangan.

Ano ang meron ang pananampalatayang nag-aalab na wala ang ordinaryong pananampalataya? Ang pagiging masigasig sa pagsunod kay Kristo. Hindi kuntento sa pagbibigay ayon sa hinihingi ng batas, bagkus nagbibigay ng higit pa sa hinihingi. Hindi kuntento sa pagtulong ayon sa kailangan, bagkus tumutulong ng higit pa sa kailangan.

Wala pong masama kung ang pananampalataya natin ay ordinaryo, tulad ng marami. Pero mas mabuti kung ang pananampalataya natin ay nag-aalab, parang apoy na nagniningas; masigasig na sumusnod sa halimbawa ni Kristo – tumulong ng higit sa kailangan, nagbigay ng higit sa hinihingi. Amen.

Tunay na Kayamanan

“Guro, iutos nga po ninyo sa kapatid ko na ibigay sa akin ang bahagi ko sa aming mana.”

Wala po yang pinag-iba sa kasalukuyan kung saan ang magkakapatid ay nag-aaway dahil sa mana. Kung saan ang mga magkakapatid ay nagpapatayan dahil sa lupa. Kung saan ang mga magkakamag-anak ay hindi nagpapansinan, hindi nag-uusap, hindi nagtutulungan dahil sa mana nila.

Ano ang sagot ng ebanghelyo? “ ‘Hangal! Sa gabing ito’y babawian ka ng buhay. Kanino mapupunta ang mga bagay na ihihanda mo?’ Ganyan ang sasapitin ng nagtitipon ng kayamanan para sa sarili, ngunit dukha naman sa paningin ng Diyos.”

Ano ang sabi ng unang pagbasa? “Walang kabuluhan, walang halaga ang lahat ng bagay, sinabi ng Mangangaral.”

Ano ang sabi ng ikalawang pagbasa? “Isaisip ninyo ang mga bagay na panlangit, hindi ang mga bagay na panlupa, sapagkat namatay na kayo at ang tunay na buhay ninyo’y natatago sa Diyos, kasama ni Kristo.”

Masama bang mag-ipon ng kayamanan? Masama bang magipon ng pera? Masama bang maging masagana sa materyal na bagay? Hindi po. Ang masama ay ang maniwala na kaya tayong iligtas ng kayamanan. Ang masama ay ang maniwala na pera lang ang mahalaga dito sa lupa. Ang masama ay ang hangarin ang materyal na bagay lamang. Ang masama ay kung hindi tayo marunong magbahagi, hindi tayo marunong magbigay.

Meron pong lumapit sa akin nagpapatulong para ayusin ang away nilang magkakapatid dahil sa mana. Sabi ng isang kapatid, “Father, walang kapa-kapatid dito. Ang sa akin ay sa akin at wala makakakuha nito.” Ibig sabihin, mas mahalaga ang mana kesa sa pagiging pamilya. Mas mahalaga ang materyal na bagay kesa sa pagmamahal.

Malakas talagang makabulag ang kinang ng materyal na bagay. Pero hindi po lahat ng kumikinang ay ginto. Malinaw ang paalala ng mga pagbasa: kailanman ang tunay na kayamanan ay hindi matatagpuan dito materyal na bagay. Ang tunay na kayamanan ay matatagpuan sa puso ng Diyos.

Transfiguration, Self-oblation and Transfi

Fr. Leo Vandrome was a legend in the seminary. He was an old Belgian missionary who spent most of his life here in the Philippines. During the time that nobody understood the theology of Karl Rahner because he was writing in German, Fr. Leo was already teaching Rahner at San Carlos. There was a story that a bishop of Belgium invited him to be an adviser during the Second Vatican Council. But he was famous with his favorite bike. He was always seen riding his bike while fanning himself. [The previous paragraph has nothing to do with the reflection, it just feels happy to be filled with the memories of Fr. Leo.]

In his room was a skull of his pet monkey. Below it was a curious saying that says: What I am today, tomorrow you will be. Kung ano ako ngayon, ikaw din bukas. It was a reminder of the reality of being finite; a reminder of temporariness of life in this world; a reminder that life ultimately is not “of” this world; a reminder of everybody’s end; and so, the necessity to build up treasure in heaven.

Imagine you are Peter, or James, or John. You go with Jesus and climb Mount Tabor. While there you see Jesus shining with an out-of-this-world glow to the point of almost blinding your eyes. And then, you see in the sky clouds forming the words: What I am today, tomorrow you will be. Wow!

Imagine that you are attending mass at Transfi. You kneel down devoutly after singing the Santo. You closed your eyes to concentrate more and listen intently to the words of consecration. Then, you open your eyes and saw the priest raising the chalice, and heard him say, “which will be given up for you. Do this is memory of me.” Then you see at the wall of the main altar, the pieces of wood formed in a spiral, moving, coming together and form the words: What I am today, tomorrow you will be. Wow!

Jesus’ Transfiguration is a foretaste of what we all shall be according to the plan of God, the glory of sharing in the life God, the brightness of being children of the Father. What happened to Jesus in Mt. Tabor will happen to us at the fulfillment of time. Transfigurations is our hope.

The Eucharist is a foretaste of the cost of fulfilling this plan of God; the challenge of self-giving love, of self-surrender, of giving oneself to God and to others [the theme of the first day of the Novena: Eukaristiya – Bukal ng Pag-aalay ng Sarili]. The self-giving love we celebrate in the Eucharist is actually the way for every Christian to fulfill the plan of God.

The victory of the Transfiguration goes through the road of the Eucharist. The glory of sharing in the divine life constitutively includes offering oneself to the divine and to the world. Self-oblation may be frightening but Transfiguration gives us hope. Self-oblation may be difficult but Transfiguration gives us strength. Self-oblation may bruise and scar us, but Transfiguration heals them with the bright light of God’s everlasting love. As we journey and await our transfiguration we take the map of self-oblation, confident that we will never go astray.

Bundok ng Pakikipagtagpo

Umakyat si Jesus sa bundok. Ilang ulit nating mababasa ito sa ebanghelyo. Umakyat siya para magdasal. Umakyat siya para harapin ang tukso, para mangaral, para ihanda ang sarili sa pagdurusa, para ipako sa krus, para mabuhay na muli. At espesyal para sa ating parokya: si Jesus umakyat sa bundok para magbagong anyo.

Ano ba ang meron sa bundok? Ano ang hiwagang dala ng bundok? Sa banal na kasulatan ang bundok ay lugar ng presensya ng Diyos. Ang sampung utos ng Diyos ay ibinigay kay Moises sa bundok. Si Elias ay iniakyat sa alapaap habang nasa bundok. Si Jesus umakyat sa langit habang nasa bundok.

Ang bundok ay espesyal na lugar ng pakikipagtagpo ng tao sa Diyos. Kaya pala maraming retreat house sa Baguio. Kaya pala masarap manalangin sa Tagaytay. Bukod sa maganda ang klima, hanggang ngayon, tagpuan pa rin ng Diyos at tao ang bundok.

Pero puede namang hindi pisikal ang tagpuang ito. Puede namang hindi pisikal ang bundok. Hindi naman kailangang mag-Baguio o mag-Tagaytay para lamang makipag-usap sa Diyos. Itong simbahang ito puede maging bundok, kung saan puede nating makatagpo ang Diyos. Itong parokyang ito puede maging bundok kung saan puede tayong magbagong anyo at marinig ang tinig ng Ama.

Kapag bago pumasok sa opisina, o sa eskuwela, o magpunta sa palengke ay naglalaan tayo ng panahon para magsimba o dumaan dito sa simbahan, bilang paghahanda sa maghapon, ang simbahang ito ang ating bundok. Kapag lumuluhod tayo dito sa harap ng tabernakulo at humihingi ng lakas para mapaglabanan ang tukso, para huwag maligaw ng landas, ang simbahang ito ang ating bundok. Kapag nagbubukas tayo ng puso at kalooban sa bawat pagdiriwang ng misa upang maitanim ang punla ng pagbabago at katapatan, ang simbahang ito ang ating bundok.

Hindi na kailangang lumayo. Kailangan lang pumasok… sa simbahang ito. Kung si Jesus ay umakyat ng bundok upang manalangin, mangaral, magbagong anyo, harapin ang krus, at muling mabuhay, tayo ay may simbahan para maging bundok ng pakikipagtagpo kay Jesus. Para sa ating mga taga-Barangay San Roque ang simbahang ito ang ating bundok. Sa simbahang ito naghihintay ang Diyos para tayo'y pumasok at makipagtagpo sa Kanya.

Love and Prayer


“Lord, teach us to pray?” This is the request of the disciple to Jesus. And so, Jesus taught them to call God, Father. The Lord’s prayer teaches us not only what to pray, but how to pray. Praying the Lord’s Prayer presupposes a disposition, an attitude. Our Father will only be meaningful if we consider ourselves children of God, and as such if we find in our hearts love for the Father. Without this love, Our Father will remain empty words, meaningless and dead. Prayer is not a word that we offer to God to communicate with him. No. Prayer is relationship. Nagdarasal tayo hindi dahil meron tayong kailangan sa Diyos, hindi dahil me reklamo tayo sa Diyos, hindi dahil obligasyon, o nakasanayan, o natatakot tayo sa anung puedeng mangyari pag hindi tayo nagdasal. Bagkus, nagdarasal tayo dahil mga anak tayo ng Diyos, at sa ating puso’y matatagpuan ang pagmamahal ng isang anak sa kanyang Ama.

Madalas ang sarap ng kuwentuhan hindi naman dahil sa pinag-uusapan [madalas nga paulit ulit naman ang kuwento], kundi sa kung sino ang kakuwentuhan. Ganyan din ang panalangin, higit sa hinihiling natin sa panalangin, ang halaga ng pagdarasal ay sa pinatutungkulan ng ating dasal. Sa pagdarasal kasama natin ang Diyos at kasama tayo ng Diyos, kaya tayo nagdarasal.

Let our prayers be rooted in a heart that longs to be with the Father. Let our prayers be expressions of our desire to embrace the Father. Let our prayers be signs of how much love we have for the Father. Without these, “Our Father” means nothing.

Choose to listen

We hear a lot of things everyday. First thing in the morning alarm wakes us up. If we turn on the t.v. we hear Unang Hirit or Umagang Kay Ganda [depends whether you are a Kapuso or a Kapamilya]. On the way to work or to school, we hear the radio. At work we hear bosses. In school we hear teachers. At recess we hear classmates and friends. Over lunch we hear officemates. From earphones we hear R'nB, rock, ballad, pop, bossa, classical. From the cellfone we hear ringtones and message alerts. We hear rumors. We hear fights. We hear sweet nothings. We hear words. We hear the world. We hear.

Ask someone towards the end of the day, what he or she heard that day, I'm pretty sure no one can enumerate everything one heard. Some, but not everything. Ears hear everything that comes its way, but the heart does not listen to everything. We may hear everything, but we do not listen to all. We choose what we want to listen to.

The world makes sure that we listen to it by bombarding us with advertisements, with invitations to go here or there, to buy this or that, to take this or that, to do this or that, to use this or that; voices that are so attractive, exciting, and interesting that it seemed impossible not to listen. But in reality we can choose what we want to listen to.

The word of God oftentimes is presented to us in an ordinary and simple way, particularly in the Liturgy of the Word, sometimes at the edge of boredom. But we choose to listen to the word of God not because it is exciting, or exuberant, or attractive. No. We choose to listen to the word of God because it is life-giving, because it is the nourishment that we cannot do without.

The world demands to be heard by over-the-top packaging. The Word demands hearing by significance. The words of the world may be exciting but the word of the Lord is life-giving. The word of the world may be attractive but the word of the Lord is effective. The word of the world may be intoxicating but the word of the Lord is inspiring. In the midst of so much distractions may we discover in the simplicity of God's word the strength to choose to listen to it.

Genuine Greatness

Feast of St. James the Apostle

The gospel reminds us that the measure of genuine greatness is not found in power but in being a servant, in genuine service.

During the time of Jesus, James is not a powerful person. Who is the most powerful person at that time? The Emperor of Rome is the most powerful person at that time. Who is the Emperor of Rome then? What is his name? Who remembers? Who cares?

Tiberius Ceasar Augustus was the Emperor of Rome during the time of Jesus, from 42 BC to 37 AD. He was the most powerful man at that time. Today, practically nobody cares who he is. No one calls to him for help. No parish is named after him. No feast is assigned to celebrate his life.

Unlike St. James, an ordinary fisherman, from a less known town, living a simple life. Parishes are named after him. His name is called for help. And every year millions celebrate his feast day. He is considered to be patron of Spain, Guatemala and Nicaragua. He is truly great, for he has served. He has served Jesus: James was one of the firsts who followed the Lord. He has served the church: James led the Christian community in Jerusalem. He served in fidelity: James died a martyr’s death, beheaded for the faith.

What is the true measure of genuine greatness? “Whoever wishes to be great among you shall be your servant.” Great is he who serves.
