Homily delivered during the Funeral Mass of Dra. Lilia Calzado, April 22, 2008, at Christ the King Parish, Greenmeadows, Quezon City.
Nakilala ko so Dra. Calzado noong April 2006. Noong bagong dating ako sa 18th avenue, kinausap niya kaagad ako at sinabi sa akin ang mga pinagawa ng parokya para maging maayos ang pagtira ko sa Transfi. At simula noon lagi na nyang kinakamusta ang lagay ko. Kasama na dun ang blood pressure ko, ang cholesterol ko, pati ang sukat ng waistline ko.
We have our own experiences with Dra. Calzado. We have our own stories to tell. And in the course of the wake we have heard some of these stories. For her family, we mourn today, the loss of a mother, a grandmother, or a tita. For many of you here, we mourn the loss of a colleague, a doctor who whose concern goes beyond ones duty. For me, I mourn the loss of a friend.
Yet, we are gathered here today to thank the Lord for giving her to us: to her family, to her friends, to her colleagues, to our parish. We thank the Lord for a servant who has taught us how to offer one’s time and talent in service of God. We thank the Lord for a servant who gave herself more than what is expected of her, a giving that goes beyond duty and obligation, a giving that is deeply rooted in charity.
Ilang beses ding lumapit sa akin si Dra. Nagrereklamo. Hindi daw pala madali magserve sa simbahan. Lagi kong sinasabi sa kanya na talagang ganun, habang lumalapit ka sa Diyos saka naman dumadating ang pagsubok. Pero hindi tumigil sa paglilingkod si Dra. Hindi siya nawalan ng loob. Hindi siya huminto. She persevered until the end.
Dra. Calzado’s tragic death may be a test of faith for many of us. We have our questions. But if there is one truth that Dra. Calzado passes on to us, is this: Persevere! Do not let her death dampen your faith in the Lord. Just as she persevered in serving the Lord even in the face of difficulties and oppositions, so we too should persevere in believing in the unconditional love of God in the face of questions brought about by her death.
In the gospel today, Jesus said to his disciples, “If you loved me you will rejoice that I am going to the Father.” I would like to believe that the same words can be applied to us now. If we love Dra., we will rejoice that she is going to the Father, for the Father will complete the love we have for her. Kung mahal natin si Dra., hindi tayo mangangamba na siya ay bumalik na sa Ama, dahil malinaw sa atin na mahal ni Dra. ang Ama, at ang pagmamahal ng Ama ay higit sa kahit anung pagmamahal na kaya nating ibigay. Kaya, kahit may lungkot sa ating mga puso dahil nauna na sa atin ang isang mahal sa buhay, meron din namang kapanatagan sa ating kalooban dahil kapiling niya ang Amang kanyang minahal at pinaglingkuran.
Si Dra. Calzado ay usherette sa aming parokya, o yung tinatawag na Greeters and Collectors. Linggu-linggo sila ay nakatayo sa may pintuan ng simbahan at sumasalubong sa mga nagsisimba. Tumutulong sa paghahanap ng upuan. Tumutulong sa pagsaway ng maiingay na bata.
Dra., alam naming kung paano mo sinalubong ang mga nagsisimba linggu-linggo sa pintuan ng Transfi, kapag dumating na ang oras namin, sasalubungin mo rin kami sa pintuan ng langit. Malungkot kami sapagkat nauna ka sa amin. Subalit hindi kami pinanghihinaan ng loob, sapagkat ang iyong alaala ay magsisilbing gabay sa amin. Amen.
