I am because we are.

I am because we are. - John Mbiti

One's identity is not a solitary possession, discovered through mental introversion, through disengagement form the webs of relationship, me thinking about myself. It is given by membership of one's community -- the family, the clan, the tribe or the nation. One becomes a person through integration into the community, by embracing one's posoition and enacting one's role.
